Well, Ben Affleck really poked a few holes in an already sinking ship when he decided to drop out of directing the stand alone Batman film. In an attempt to cover their open wounds, Warners has released some casting news for Aquaman to try and bury the lead of Affleck’s departure.
THR reports that the star of Netflix’s The Get Down Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, is in early talks to play Aquaman’s antagonist, Black Manta. It’s reported that WB has been vetting performers for the villain the past few weeks and recently landed on Abdul-Mateen II this past weekend. It has also been reported that Wan’s top choice for Aquaman’s mother, Queen Atlanna, is none other than the lovely recent Oscar nominee, Nicole Kidman.
Neither actor has officially signed onto the film with an already impressive cast. Jason Momoa is the titular character with Amber Heard playing his love interest, Mera. Willem Dafoe recently signed on to play Nuidis Vulko, Aquaman’s advisor. Patrick Wilson was also announced as Orm Marius, a.k.a. Ocean Master, a villain who happens to be Aquaman’s half-brother. With both Black Manta and Ocean Master in the film, it appears we have an approach similar to Marvels latest, Doctor Strange, which saw 2 villains in the same origin story.
