Ava Duvernay is one of the hottest names in film right now after her incredible turn directing Selma. It should come as no shock that her name continues to come up consistently with virtually everything, and you have to respect that she is quite selective, and refuses to settle on something she may not be comfortable with. She was rumored to be the top choice for the upcoming Marvel property Black Panther and also for Captain Marvel, but she declined Disney’s offer to helm either of the two. Well, Disney is reportedly not giving up without a fight, as they want to be in the Ava Duvernay business. They have now offered her the upcoming A Wrinkle In Time Based on the classic novel of the same name by Madeleine L’Engle, and Amblin has also offered her Intelligent Life, which is a sci fi film written by Jurassic World writer and director Colin Trevorrow.
Both films are sci fi based content and would certainly be new challenge for the director. A Wrinkle In Time follows a young girl, whose government father has gone missing while working on a mysterious project, and is the first in a series of novels. This appears to be possible franchise film for Disney who are looking to capitalize.
Meanwhile Intelligent Life is a film that Trevorrow is looking to give up directing, as his schedule is just a bit too busy, with Jurassic World 2 and Star Wars Episode IX coming up. The original screenplay is described to be “a fable about a U.N worker in a department designed to represent mankind if there was ever contact with aliens, who falls for a mysterious woman who turns out to be an alien.”
So which if the two is Duvernay going to choose? She is good friends with Trevorrow but fellow director Denis Villeneuve just wrapped a similar sci fi film titled Story of Your Life. That partnered with the fact that Disney is a company that almost anyone would want to be affiliated with these days would have smart money on A Wrinkle In Time. One thing we do know, is that whichever she chooses we are in for a treat. She is one of the most talented filmmakers out right now and it will amazing to have her tackle a sci fi related film. Admittedly I am crossing my fingers for her to helm A Wrinkle In Time, because I read the book in middle school and loved it.
So what do you guys think of the news surrounding Duvernay? Which project do you want to see her direct? Drop a comment and let us know what you think.
