In a previous report, Bro Knows spoke of the possibility of Ava Duvernay directing Disney’s adaptation of A Wrinkle in Time. Well it has finally been made official, and Duvernay is now set to helm the feature film backed by Disney. The Selma director will be making her debut into blockbusters with this massive Disney film set to have a large budget and an epic scope. Duvernay has been rumored to direct a number of projects, but has not been locked down for any until now. Disney had locked into the director and was determined to sign her to one of their upcoming projects.
A Wrinkle In Time is the first in a series of novels penned by Madeline L’engle, which revolves around the story of a young girl whose government scientist father goes missing while working on a mysterious new project. As she sets out on the search for her father she passes through multiple dimensions and comes into contact in numerous mystical creatures. The project is likely to be a massive undertaking that will test Duvernay in ways that she may not have been before. One thing is certain, she has a profound nack for character developement, so this will not be a cooki cutter film with one dimensional characters.
Though she is officially signed on to do this feature film, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will be her next feature. She is still in talks to possibly direct the upcoming sci fi drama Intelligent Life, which has Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o attached to star, and is tells the story of a UN worker in a department designed to to represent the human race in the event of first contact with alien life, who falls for a mystery woman. The script is by Jurassic World helmer Colin Trevorrow, Duvernay directing Intelligent Life is still in the realm of possibility, since no release date has been pinned down for A Wrinkle In Time as of yet. So we could very well see Duvernay take on both projects, leaving the only question being which one comes first?
