Let’s face facts, for as amazing as Marvel has been with their epic cinematic universe, their villains have been repeatedly lackluster at best. With the exception of Loki, there has really yet to be a formidable fully developed baddie in the MCU. This has been masked by otherwise phenomenal hero development, but there is no question the villain issue has been a hinderance on Marvel which has led to diminishing stakes as the films grow in scale.

So what is to become of the biggest of all villains that looms large both figuratively and literally, Thanos. The big man has been teased since the first Avengers film, and made his first speaking appearance in the original Guardians of the Galaxy, but has so far been an ancillary character in the background, whose motives have been unclear, and actions have been hazy. He was inadvertently reduced to a fool in GOTG and his post credits scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron was puzzling. So Marvel has an uphill battle for their upcoming Avengers: Infinity War, with just 3 movies left from here to there.

On the set of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige said that the big bad of the MCU will finally get his due in Infinity War:

“Thanos in Infinity War is – in a movie that has a lot of characters, you could almost go so far as to say he is the main character, and that’s a bit of a departure from what we’ve done before, but that was appropriate for a movie called Infinity War.”

Well that is quote the change of direction. Could it be that Infinity War is a Thanos movie? Taking a 180 turn from their previous entries, which have had a hard focus on the hero leaving much to be desired for the villains, this could be an interesting shake up, but at the same time, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.

Filming on Avengers: Infinity War is underway in Atlanta. The film is set for release on May 4, 2018.
