We have seen an upturn in the number of past due sequels and reboots lately. The most unexpected and perhaps most anticipated has to be the long awaited sequel to the classic Blade Runner. With Denis Villeneuve, the director of Sicario and Prisoners, set to helm the film with a screenplay by Hampton Fancher who co wrote the original, and Michael Green, this is an exciting property. The film has landed Ryan Gosling in a lead role, and has confirmed Harrison Ford to reprise his role from the original as Rick Deckard. To top it all off, legendary cinematographer Roger Deakins has signed on as well. So if nothing else, this will be a beautiful looking movie.
The talk was that Blade Runner 2 would move into production at some point in 2016 but there was no set start date, until now. We have officially received word that the film will begin shooting this summer, in July. This news comes on the back of the news that Sony has procured the international distribution rights to the film, while Warner Brothers will maintain the North American rights per their deal with Alcon.
This is a property that we still know little about, except that we have a great director, great writers, a great foundation to the cast, and a brilliant cinematographer. Plot details be damned, we have the early makings of one hell of a sequel here. The news that Ford will return to the franchise is that little bit of extra that will bring smiles to the fans of the original. Still no clarity into the potential plot points of the film, it doesn’t seem to matter at this point.
So what do you guys think of the news? Are you excited for a Blade Runner sequel? Drop a comment and let us know what you think.
