Oh Ridley Scott, you’re a strange bird. Ridley Scott is the mad genius that brought us films like Alien, Blade Runner, and Gladiator. Which is all great, but he’s also the same guy that brought us Exodus Gods and Kings, Robin Hood, and perhaps the most disappointing film of 2013 The Counselor. Ridley Scott is one enigmatic man. That being said, he is man with a vision and a new film starring Matt Damon! The Martian is the feature film adaptation of the Andy Weir novel about a man stranded on a foreign planet alone, with no way out and no means of communication to the outside world.
Hoping to snap his downward spiral Ridley Scott wet out and got himself some great source material and one very talented cast. The Martian brings with it Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, and Kristen Wiig. The good news here is that Scott didn’t write the script! Drew Goddard penned the screenplay basically leaving Scott with just one job, which is to shoot the hell out of this thing.
If there is one thing Scott can do, it’s make a beautiful movie. Exodus was a snoozer, but it was also gorgeous. Prometheus had it’s problems, but there is no denying that it is visually stunning. So if nothing else, if we allow the script to do it’s work and Scott to produce some nice visuals, then we have ourselves a solid film.
We haven’t seen any footage yet, but thanks to Collider we now have some of our first images from the set!
Check out the images!
These images give us a small peak into the film. It certainly looks cool, but looks can be deceiving. It kind of has the look of Damon’s character in Interstellar a little bit. The premise also has a similar feel to Damon’s character arc in Interstellar actually. So let’s hope this doesn’t just end up being a mini sequel about Damon’s character from Interstellar!
In all seriousness it’s nice to see some images, and in all honesty this premise is right up Scott’s alley. He is a great sci-fi director on a cold streak, but this could help him turn it around. Definitely one of the most anticipated films of the year. It’s a great cast, with an interesting story and if done right could garner some serious attention come Oscar time. Here’s hoping Scott still has some magic left!
What do you guys out in Bro Nation think of the images? You guys excited for The Martian? Do you guys think Ridley Scott still has it in him to make a solid film? Drop a comment and let’s start a discussion!
