Independance Day is one of those epic disaster films where quality i not of concern. To be fair there are no disaster movies where quality does actually matter, but I digress. The fact is, when it came out twenty years ago, it was a mega action blockbuster. Right down to the tentacled aliens and the floppy disk virus that did them in. So the news of a new slate of sequels to the lovable original is no surprise. What is a surprise is that it took twenty years to revisit. So now we have an Independence Day sequel with no Will Smith, and that is maybe fifteen years too late. Never the less there is a nostalgic factor in it for us here at Bro Knows. I myself remember seeing this bad boy at a very young age. My mom took my brother and myself to see it, and i’m fairly certain it was the first PG-13 movie I had ever seen. It was glorious!
Well since the new set of sequels to the film has been announced we have been met with a series of questions like, Why no Will Smith? Where do you go from the last film? Do we at least get Goldblum back?? While two of the three have been answered, we still have no idea how this film is going to truly build upon the success of its predecessor. When you want to make money sometimes you just have to go back to the well.
For the time being what we do have is our first poster for the upcoming sequel, and it looks pretty nostalgic.
Check out the poster!!
The poster is pretty cool. There is still a great amount of skepticism surrounding the film and for good reason. This is simply one of those Hollywood movies that is difficult to justify. As a big fan of the original it’ll be a tough pill to swallow if they blow the sequels. The worry is that they will settle for trying to just copy the original in an effort to duplicate its success. If they can figure out a way to build on the original and create a unique spin then we will buy in completely. For the time being the jury’s still out.
Independence Day 2 will be Roland Emmerich’s next film following this year’s Stonewall, and is currently shooting with Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Liam Hemsworth, Maika Monroe, Jessie Usher, Joey King, Sela Ward, Brett Spiner, Vivica A. Fox, William Fichtner, Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Judd Hirsch. With the release date set for June of next year, the first poster has dropped. Check it out below.
So what do you guys out in Bro Nation think of the first poster? Are you excited for the upcoming movie? Drop a comment and let’s start a discussion.
