It’s no secret that Gus Van Sant is an incredible director. With films on his resume like Good Will Hunting and Milk, he’s one of those directors you pay attention to when he announces a project. His next film is the upcoming Sea of Trees and it’s easily one of the most anticipated films of the year. Following two men as they enter Japan’s Aokigahara forest, which is famously known in real life as the sea of trees or the suicidal forest. With Matthew Mcconaughey and Ken Watanabe starring as the leads and Van Sant directing this promises to be an intense and beautiful film.

Lionsgate had already picked up the rights to this film even prior to it’s premier at the Cannes Film Festival, which is a good sign. The film has no release date as of yet but is expected to release sometime in the late fall, just in time for Oscar season. Likely to garner attention from the academy, this has an extraordinarily interesting premise and incredible talent behind it. Only time will tell if this is as good as it sounds, or if it’s too good to be true.

In conjunction with the acquisition of the film, Cannes was decent enough to release a clip as well as a detailed synopsis to give us a better idea of what to expect. Check out the clip below!

“It’s love and loss that lead Arthur Brennan, across the world to Japan’s Aokigahara, a mysterious dense forest known as The Sea of Trees lapping the foothills of Japan’s Mount Fuji – a place where people go to contemplate life and death. Arthur enters the depths of the forest and loses himself beyond the guiding ribbons threaded through the trees by many before him. Having found the perfect place to die, Arthur encounters Takumi Nakamura, a Japanese man who also appears to have lost his way. Unable to leave Takumi behind, Arthur invests all of his remaining energy into saving Takumi and returning him to safety. The two men embark on a journey of reflection and survival, which affirms Arthur’s will to live and reconnects him to his love with his wife. “

Look ever since the news for this film dropped a little while back Bro Knows has been excited. Van Sant is amazing and what he did with Good Will Hunting is breathtaking. He knows how to add depth and focus on characters. Everything about this film so far indicates a very character driven story and then you add the talent of a Ken Watanabe and Matthew Mcconaughey on top of everything else. It will very interesting to see how this film works given the intimate setting and the fact that it appears to largely be a two man film. Either way the clip is fantastic and allows us to see a small piece of the chemistry between our leads. It certainly does nothing but enhance the excitement for the upcoming Sea of Trees.
