Recently, Disney dropped the live action adaptation of the famous anime film Ghost In The Shell from their slate. The good news, is that Paramount picked up the property and are moving it into production, with Scarlett Johansson attached to star as the lead. The film has officially begun principal photography in New Zealand, and we now have our first image from the movie. For those unfamiliar, Ghost in the Shell follows the character of Major, who is a special ops leader who also happens to be a unique human-cyborg hybrid. The new film is being directed by Snow White and The Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders. It has also been announced that Boardwalk Empire actor Michael Pitt, will star as the film’s main antagonist, The Laughing Man, or Kuze. Kuze is also half human half cyborg and is a hacker of sorts. Fans of the Manga will likely be disappointed that the villain in the film will not be The Puppeteer. Collider’s David Trumbore explains the decision:

While the decision not to include the Puppeteer/Puppet Master is a little disappointing considering the rich thematic material that particular villain brought to the story, Laughing Man might actually be an easier sell for today’s audiences. This isn’t your typical bad guy, just like Kusanagi’s Public Security Section 9 aren’t your typical good guys. The Laughing Man is an anti-corporate terrorist and social media-savvy super-hacker who is able to mask his identity by both real-time manipulation of video feeds and cybernetic brains. His trademark logo – which, along with his moniker, was inspired by J.D. Salinger’s “The Catcher in the Rye” – masks his face. His part to play is certainly an interesting on in the series, and one that Pitt could do quite well with, as long as he doesn’t mind hiding behind a smiley face logo the whole movie a la V for Vendetta.

So apparently The Laughing Man will be a more digestible character for modern audiences to fathom. The film sounds like it will be a lot of fun, and the hope is that Rupert Sanders will make this more interesting than the sluggish Snow White adaptation he directed.

Ghost in the Shell also stars Beat Takeshi Kitano as Daisuke Aramaki, Juliette Binoche As Dr. Ouelet, Pilou Asbæk as Batou, as well as Kaori Momoi. The members of Section 9 are played by Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara, and Tuwanda Manyimo. The film is set to open March 31st 2017.
