GIANT ROBOTS FIGHTING GIANT MONSTERS!! Yes friends, that is correct, Pacific Rim 2 has begun shooting. The highly anticipated sequel to the bombastic and exhilarating sci-fi action epic from Guillermo Del Toro, is well into production and we now have our first look on set via John Boyega’s twitter. Boyega is set to star in the sequel titles Pacific Rim: Maelstrom, alongside returning cast member Idris Elba.

Check out the pics here!

So we don’t see Boyega step inside his own jaeger just yet, and it’s mostly just a bunch of standing around and pointing, but the photos represent the “tangibilization” (act of something becoming tangible) of the project. Yes we understand that is a made up word, but who cares! Paparazzi witnessed some of the filming which featured Boyega apparently searching for something in what seems to be a post apocalyptic backdrop. So perhaps the explosion from the last film had some unexpected residual effects?

Still no word on other returning cast members, like Ron Perlman. Though it has been made abundantly clear that Charlie Hunnam would not be back for Maelstrom. Steven DeKnight of Netflix’s various Marvel series’ will be helming the project, taking over duties from Del Toro. Though he won’t be in the director’s chair, Guillermo has his fingerprints all over this film. Del Toro has said that Maelstrom picks up a couple years after the Kaiju had been destroyed, when people are beginning to transition back to a world without big giant monsters terrorizing them.

Pacific Rim: Maelstrom also stars Scott Eastwood, Cailee Spaeny, Jing Tian, and Levi Meaden and has very recently added additional cast members Zhang Jin, alongside Wesley Wong, Lily Ji, Chen Zitong, Lan Yingying and Qian Yongchen with cameos by Xiao Yang and Korean actor Kim Jeong-Hoon. The film is set to hit theaters February 23rd, 2018.
