The Intouchables is a French film about an Ex con who becomes the caretaker for a quadriplegic millionaire earned international recognition and made nearly $420 million at the international box office. In america it made roughly $10 million, and because Americans don’t like subtitles with their cinema it appears we will get an americanized remake to the beautiful and heartfelt film. The Weinstein Co is the distributing company and they are still looking for the their two leads, and apparently the favorites for those roles are currently Kevin Hart and Bryan Cranston.
The original film starred French actors Francois Cluzet and Omar Sy. Sy, may look familiar as he has gone on to major film roles in features like Jurassic World, Burnt, X-Men Days of Future Past, and is set to star in the upcoming Ron Howard film Inferno. Oddly enough Bridesmaids and Ghostbusters director Paul Feig was initially set to write and direct this remake but has since stepped away and currently there is no particular director assigned just yet, but the Weinsteins seem determined to get this film off the ground. Chris Tucker and Colin Firth were at one point rumored to star, but attention has since shifted to Hart and Cranston. Cranston is fresh off his Oscar nominated role in Trumbo, and Hart has seen a lot of success in comedies like Get Hard, and Ride Along 1 and 2, but given the material this would be something we have never seen Hart attempt, so it would be interesting, if not a little worrisome to see him attack a character and a project that has so much emotional range.
Check out the trailer for the French film below, and stop being lazy and xenophobic and watch a movie with subtitles and we promise you will not be sorry.
