It has now been officially announced. Ryan Coogler, The director of Creed and Fruitvale Station will be the man helming the upcoming Marvel film Black Panther.
Coogler who has been making waves with his reinvigorated Rocky franchise film, also caused a stir with his dramatic project that crushed the festival circuit a few years ago Fruitvale Station. He pretty much had his pick of projects and settled with Marvel to be the man who will take on Chadwick Boseman’s T’challa. There is a lot of excitement coming from Disney and Marvel regarding the young director due to his work with Sylvester Stallone, essentially directing him to what may be his best performance with his work in Creed.
In an official statement Marvel had the following to say about the news:
“We are fortunate to have such an esteemed filmmaker join the Marvel family…The talents Ryan showcased in his first two films easily made him our top choice to direct ‘Black Panther.’ Many fans have waited a long time to see Black Panther in his own film, and with Ryan we know we’ve found the perfect director to bring T’Challa’s story to life.”
Marvel may have landed one of the hottest directors in hollywood at the moment, but unfortunately for Warner Bros, they will be forced to either wait for Coogler to be available, or move forward with a different director for the Creed sequel.
There has been a lot of speculation as to who would end up behind the camera for this much anticipated project. The early favorite was the Selma director Ava Duvernay, but she bowed out of contention earlier this year. Coogler had been reportedly in negotiations with Disney since early October, but the decision was not made official until yesterday.
