Robert Downey Jr. isn’t one o shy away from a paycheck. When it became evident that he was going to struggle to separate himself form the iconic Iron Man after the flop of The Judge, he immediately signed on to appear in a few more MCU films. So the idea of him playing a doctor that can inexplicably speak to animals, doesn’t seem like much of a stretch. Imagining that his iteration of the psychotic vet will be eerily similar to Tony Stark, it seems clear that this is a cash grab, but could perhaps be an entertaining one.
Downey has been confirmed to star in The Voyage of Dr. Doolittle, with Stephen Gaghan set to write and direct the film, according to THR. Gaghan who made a name for himself with Syriana and, more recently, Gold. Universal earned the distribution during a bidding war.
This will be the first Dr. Doolittle film since the Eddie Murphy versions back in the 90’s, which were surprisingly successful. No details are known on the plot just yet, and no release date, or even production start date has been announced. Gaghan seems the curious choice, unless this film plans for a darker tone than we are used to from this character. Downey is also an insanely busy fella, with Avengers films currently shooting, a directing gig on TV’s Singularity and apparently is planning to work with Richard Linklater on a film about John R. Brinkley.
Gaghan will warm up for this film with a video game adaptation of The Division, with Jake Gyllenhaal and Jessica Chastain.
