Fans of Japanese Manga and and Anime were likely extremely excited when it was announced the Ghost in The Shell was getting a live action adaptation. They were likely equally upset at the casting of several white performers to play Asian characters. The controversy surrounding good old Scar Jo as the main character certainly ruffled some feathers, but all is well as long as the film is good right? Well we have our first indicator of its merits. The trailer for Ghost in the Shell is here, and it is a sight to see.

This looks pretty incredible. Playing like a music video for Martin Garrix, the visuals in this trailer are absolutely insane. The story aside, it’s clear this is going to look beautiful. As far as the substance, we are given more than expected for a first trailer. We can clearly discern the motivational details of the protagonist “Major” played by Johansson. What we haven’t gathered just yet, is who everyone else is, and what side they are on, or even what the sides are. We understand Major is looking for her lost past, but it’s not clear who or what is standing in her way. Admittedly knowing very little about the Manga, and just going off of the trailer, this is a win for Ghost in The Shell. They nailed the look of this strange futuristic society, which eerily resembles the lauded Blade Runner. The action is bound to be epic, but the “whitewashing” concern still lingers. There were not a whole lot of Japanese people for a film that takes place in Japan! Even so, this looks like it could be a ton of fun.

Here is the synopsis for the film:

Cyborg counter-cyberterrorist field commander The Major (Scarlett Johansson), and her task force Section 9 thwart cyber criminals and hackers. Now, they must face a new enemy who will stop at nothing to sabotage Hanka Robotic’s artificial intelligence technology.

The film stars Scarlett Johansson, Pilou Asbæk, Takeshi Kitano, Juliette Binoche, and Michael Pitt. It will be released on March 31, 2017 in 2D, 3D and IMAX 3D.
