Trailer Spotlight: High-Rise

Fewer actors are as beloved currently as Tom Hiddleston. Most may only know him as Loki, but the man does have wide ranging talent. He is given his moment on the sun in the latest trailer for High-Rise, the enigmatic new film from Ben Wheatley. Previous teasers have given us glimpses of Hiddleston’s Dr. Laing adjusting to life in his new massive apartment complex. The new trailer provides more exposition, and gives us more of the lay out and a glimpse into the base story. It seems from the trailer that Dr. Laing is slowly descending into debauchery and sinful behaviors as he marches into madness. The trailer is very eclectic and feels very Terrence Malick like, with a vibrant array of images and scenes flying at you from all angles. The trailer is manic, and still feels like a subdued provision of the film.

Here is the official synopsis:

The new film from acclaimed director Ben Wheatley in UK cinemas March 18th.

Adapted from J.G. Ballard’s visionary novel by screenwriter Amy Jump, HIGH – RISE stars Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss.

1975. Two miles west of London, Dr. Robert Laing moves into his new apartment seeking soulless anonymity, only to find that the building’s residents have no intention of leaving him alone. Resigned to the complex social dynamics unfolding around him, Laing bites the bullet and becomes neighbourly. As he struggles to establish his position, Laing’s good manners and sanity disintegrate along with the building. The lights go out and the lifts fail but the party goes on. People are the problem. Booze is the currency. Sex is the panacea. Only much later, as he sits on his balcony eating the architect’s dog, does Dr. Robert Laing finally feel at home…..

What? That is one incredibly strange synopsis and the trailer almost gives of a Snowpiercer vibe, sub out the train for a massive apartment complex. High Rise is also starring Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans, Elisabeth Moss, James Purefoy, and Sienna Guillory, High-Rise is due out in UK theaters on March 18th. A release date for the States has yet to be officially announced.
