I was recently on the Pay Me No Mind podcast and was asked a very valid question: “what’s the difference between Baby Driver and Drive?” While the two films are definitely separate, the first trailer for Edgar Wright’s upcoming action thriller definitely drew some parallels to Nicholas Winding Refn’s 80’s throwback. The only response I can muster, is that Baby Driver seems to be what most people expected Drive was going to be, which is a crazy fun, balls to the wall, humorous action thriller set to a soundtrack.
The international trailer is definitely a more clear depiction of what this film seems to be, with a larger focus on the soundtrack, and some of the quirky humor that Wright is apt to bring on his projects. The international trailer also sheds some more light on Baby’s relationship with the various criminals he is surrounded by, and it also reveals a few more action set pieces that are sure to make this movie one to remember. The music is what is going to set this apart, that and the comedy, which is much more prevalent in this trailer than the American one.
Baby Driver stars Ansel Elgort, Kevin Spacey, Jon Hamm, Jamie Foxx, Lily James and Jon Bernthal. The film is written and directed by Edgar Wright, and is set to release August 11th.
