Trailer Spotlight: Suicide Squad

The MTV Movie awards is perhaps the most ridiculous award show known to man. Were talking about a movie awards show that takes place in April, features only big blockbuster films (some of them being not very good), allowing a fan vote, and is held by a channel whose acronym is for Music Television. I don’t think I can remember the last time I watched a music video on MTV, so they should really look into changing their name. This is the same award show that gave Melissa McCarthy a comedic spotlight award for great achievement in the field of comedy. The same Melissa McCarthy who put out such gems as Tammy, Identity Thief, and the god awful film that opened this weekend The Boss. She has literally had two solid comedic performances with Bridesmaids, and Spy, the latter of which she was comedically outstaged by the normally stoic Jason Statham. But we digress. During this sour excuse for an awards show we were provided with various glimpses into properties that we are very excited to get more from, perhaps the most exciting of which is Suicide Squad. The cast of the upcoming DC film were in attendance to unveil a brand new trailer to fans, and folks, it was worth sitting through the MTV awards to see the trailer live on TV.

THIS IS AWESOME! With this being the technical third trailer for the film, with the leaked comic con trailer and the amazing “Bohemian Rhapsody” preview being the first two, we are given some new footage, some added context, and a balls to wall energy encapsulated by the classic The Sweet song “Ballroom Blitz.” We get a lot more of Jared Leto’s Joker, some solid Deadshot action, and as per usual plenty of Harley Quinn. While plot specifics are not presented in this trailer, that’s probably the best part. We know The Joker is going to play some sort of villainous role, but we do not know if he is the main antagonist or if there is a greater threat looming. We don’t really know what this team is being assembled to accomplish, but we are given some additional context on that subject. They essentially are looking for a back up plan to utilize against super beings like Superman, that they have some control over. The trailer is just non stop fun, and the soundtrack adds to an eclectic mix of color and action that rushes the screen. This scoffs at the idea that the reshoots they are currently undergoing are strictly tonal to add needed levity, it looks to us like there is a whole lot of levity in this film to begin with. This trailer conveys a weirdly dark comedic presence while still reflecting the mantra that this is a badass action film, that features some of the coolest villains the DC universe has to offer. This is an A+ trailer, kudos to DC, David Ayer, and the top notch marketing team that’s putting these together.

The film opens August 5th and stars Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto, Jai Courtney, Joel Kinnaman, Cara Delevingne, Viola Davis, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Adam Beach, Jay Hernandez, and Karen Fukuhara.
