Trailer Spotlight: Suicide Squad

sq

Warner Bros and DC showed out at Comic-Con. They knew with the absence of Marvel, they had an opportunity to steal the show. As the lights went down on Hall H the big draw of the weekend was clearly Batman v Superman, yet somehow, through the whirlwind of super hero press and accolades it was the villains who stole the show. Director David Ayer and the cast of Suicide Squad brought Hall H to it’s feet with an incredible display of showmanship and one of the best, most unnerving trailers in recent memory. Since the trailer leaked online Warners likely thought they should get out in front of it and just release the full HD version so the public doesn’t make judgements on the grainy cell phone video that hit the web.

Check out the trailer!

Wow.. Just wow.. This has to be one of the most haunting unnerving trailers we’ve seen in some time, and it’s a comic book franchise film. This is not a horror film, this is not a Guillermo Del Toro directed feature. This is not a Blumhouse production, but this trailer is terrifyingly creepy. From the opening moments where we center in on a shady government officials dinner with Viola Davis as Amanda Waller discussing how she accrued this band of sociopathic despondent murderers. “The worst of the worst” she says following up with “Let’s just say I put em in a whole and threw away the whole.”

Then it happens, we center in on a tattered woman in an open cell hanging from the ceiling and we realize that it’s Harley Quinn. The music is slow and unsettling and so eerily appropriate. What follows is a mini story that will introduce the public to each of the characters one by one. Then, in one of the most unsettling introductions you will see, Jared Leto creeps into frame and we finally get a look at the most famous villain in comic book history. This Joker is definitely a new iteration but with similar sensibilities. It’s almost like a mixture between Heath Ledgers and Mark Hamil’s from the animated version. This promises to be one of the most sadistic dark and twisted versions of the character we have ever seen and it looks boldly beautiful and horrifying. This trailer does something so rare, it opens it’s audience to the characters and tells a story, but it doesn’t tip it’s hand completely and we still don’t really know what the story is. This trailer is a masterpiece and made every hair on our bodies stand at attention. David Ayer has created a film that will likely steal the thunder from Batman v Superman, just as it did at Comic-Con. Well done DC and Warner Bros.. Well done.
