Trailer Spotlight: The Neon Demon

Nicolas Winding Refn is on interesting visionary. His films breed debate like none other, and are generally critically acclaimed, but do not always translate into commercial successes. This is the man behind Drive, Bronson, and Only God Forgives. His latest effort, The Neon Demon will be screened at the Cannes Film Festival. This is the follow up to his less than well received Only God Forgives, and we now have our first trailer, and it is, well.. Very much what you would expect from a Refn film at this point. The color palate pops, and it almost is reminiscent of the famous Dario Argento film Suspira, in it’s technicolor scheme. The story of the film hinges on a model, played by the surpassingly talented Elle Fanning, who enters a wild, “dangerous” world where competition is constant and bloody, and the image is all that matters to those who hold the strings. The visuals are polarizing and the aesthetic stunning.

While the trailer is visually stunning, the concern lies with what he story may be. While all of Refn’s film are like art in motion, sometimes the visuals overtake the plot and make for a irritating and frustratingly nonsensical plot points that never create a coherent narrative, like the aforementioned Only God Forgives. The cast of the film is anchored by Elle Fanning, who looks beyond gorgeous here, and is insanely talented. The film appears to be grounded by women, and with a mostly female cast, this is certainly an intriguing concept. The hope is that, while the film shares a similar visual design to Argento’s Suspiria, that Refn doesn’t share the same disdain for women that Argento did. All in all this trailer is a big buy, and this is a film that we look forward to viewing.
