Doug Liman has been killing it lately with Edge of Tomorrow and Mission Impossible, so when the first trailer for his latest directorial effort hit the web yesterday, it was surprising. The Wall is very much a scaled back action thriller and Liman seems to be making a return to indie format with this secluded tale of two soldiers facing an anonymous invisible threat. Amazon Studios and Roadside Attractions team up with Liman for this psychological standoff film, and if Manchester By The Sea is any indicator then this will surely be one incredible film.

This looks pretty amazing. John Cena has slowly been turning his career around starting with a slew of comedic roles and now re entering the dramatic world with a role that seems tailor made for him. It will be interesting to see him and Aaron Taylor-Johnson play off of each other as the only two characters to carry film save for an ominous voice. The visuals are distinct, and the trailer is exciting, though it runs the risk of giving away a little too much. The story is solid but the big question mark lies with the performers. Can Taylor-Johnson and John Cena carry a film on their own, especially one of this conceit? Hopefully yes, because this seems like it could be a terrific thriller that would make up for the nonsense that was Man Down.
