Trailer Spotlight: We Are Your Friends

Zac Efron has certainly diversified in his career. He has come a long way from his High School Musical days, and has made real strides as an actor. Stay with me on this Bro Nation, because I know I’m probably going to lose some people with this comparison, but he reminds me of a young Leo Dicaprio. If you don’t remember, Dicaprio was a young teen heart throb taking on several lackluster roles because he was a good looking kid that young women loved. Then came Titanic. Well Efron was also a young teen heart throb, who had several lackluster roles, then came Charlie St. Cloud. Now that’s obviously not the ridiculous mega hit Titanic was, but it’s a performance that Efron finally broke through with. He was amazing in that film and showed that he really can act.

As of late Efron has been doing a lot of questionable material. That Awkward Moment was okay, Parkland was iffy, and Neighbors was great, but that’s a lighter role. Efron finally decided to get a little bit deeper with the upcoming We Are Your Friends. Courtesy of Warner Brothers we get our first trailer for the film about an up and coming DJ.

Here’s the official synopsis!

“We Are Your Friends” is about what it takes to find your voice. Set in the world of electronic music and Hollywood nightlife, an aspiring 23-year-old DJ named Cole (Efron) spends his days scheming with his childhood friends and his nights working on the one track that will set the world on fire. All of this changes when he meets a charismatic but damaged older DJ named James (Bentley), who takes him under his wing. Things get complicated, however, when Cole starts falling for James’ much younger girlfriend, Sophie (Ratajkowski). With Cole’s forbidden relationship intensifying and his friendships unraveling, he must choose between love, loyalty, and the future he is destined for.”

Call me crazy, but I love the trailer. The story about a struggling twenty something pursuing his passion. It has a look and aesthetic of a Terrence Malik film or even Soderbergh. The trailer plays like a whirlwind fever dream and Efron is at the center of it all. We Are Your friends looks like a cross between Magic Mike, Project X, and The Spectacular Now. Bringing with it, an impressive cast, and an interesting premise that really hasn’t been explored extensively in film, this has all the makings of a bold, beautiful, and adventurous experience.

The film stars Zac Efron,  Wes Bentley, Jonny Weston, Emily Ratajkowski and Jon Bernthal and is directed by Max Joseph. We Are Your Friends is set for release on August 28, 2015.
