JJ Abrams has proven to be one sneaky bastard with his projects. From the abject mistruth of Khan in Star Trek, to the neck breaking twists and turns on Lost, Abrams loves to screw with his fan base. Last years 10 Cloverfield Lane threw everyone for a loop when it literally came out of nowhere when it was revealed to be a part of cinematic universe, or clover-verse, if you will. With all the mystery that Abrams production company, Bad Robot, keeps about their projects, it’s no wonder that the upcoming WWII film Overlord, is starting to raise some questions over whether to not it is a part of the clover-verse.
Jeff “The Inschnieder” Schneider, recently broke the casting news that Overlord has added Jovan Adepo (Fences) and Wyatt Russell (22 Jump Street) as the leads. Overlord is going to be directed by Julius Avery (Son of a Gun) and is about a group of American paratroopers dropped behind enemy lines on the eve of D-Day. On the approach to their target–a village under Nazi occupation–they start to realize there there’s more to this place than a military operation.
While at first glance that may sound like a classic war time drama, the last sentence in the log line is ominous to say the least and with Abrams producing, it’s definitely a red flag. The clover-verse team are all on board, at least in terms of production. The shared universe is also set to add new entries with The Cloverfield IMAX Movie, which is set to drop on October 27th this year and The God particle, starring David Oyelowo and Gugu Mbatha Raw. The latter was set to release in February of this year, but was mysteriously pulled from he schedule, without any word on a new release date.
All signs point to Overlord being the 2018 clover-verse project, with God Particle perhaps being announced sometime for early 2018 or early 2019? While nothing is certain, it is still fun to follow the bread crumbs.
